New technologies

estlab Mehtimäki provides a versatile environment that makes use of testing and measurement technologies based on photonics research. Our equipment includes high‑quality eye‑tracking glasses, a mobile motion‑tracking system, and the Glean XR headset, which combines immersive and neurotechnology. These technologies support, for example, sports performance analysis, monitoring of recovery, and the development of individualized training methods. They also offer new ways to enhance motivation and promote well‑being through immersive and interactive experiences. Below you can explore the available technologies and the opportunities they provide.

During 2025, we piloted eye‑tracking glasses, motion‑tracking technology, and the Galea XR headset across 14 sports in collaboration with 14 companies, associations, and organisations in the sports and well‑being sector. The TestLab Mehtimäki YouTube channel features more than 30 videos demonstrating the use of these technologies in various training and coaching contexts. The devices can also be applied in healthcare, for example as tools for physiotherapy and rehabilitation.

If you are interested in testing the equipment for your own training, coaching, business activities, thesis work, or academic research, a free introduction and orientation is offered by Professor Pasi Vahimaa from the University of Eastern Finland’s Department of Physics and Mathematics. You can contact him to arrange a hands‑on demonstration:

Eye-tracking

Vision plays a central role in almost all forms of physical activity and sport. The SeeTrue eye‑tracking glasses we use enable precise measurement of eye movements in a wide range of situations. They can also be used to train gaze control as part of other training routines.

The glasses are suitable for mobile use by both high‑performance athletes and everyday exercisers.

Pose-tracking

In enhancing movement efficiency and reducing the risk of injury, it is essential to pay attention to body positions during motion. At TestLab Mehtimäki, this is supported by the open‑source MMPose tool, which identifies key body points from video or images and creates a visual model of the mover based on these points.

This model makes it possible to assess, for example, knee and elbow angles, which can also be examined numerically. The resulting information supports the analysis and development of technical performance, whether in sports, coaching, or physiotherapy.

If you would like to try MMPose yourself, you can learn more and download the free installation package:

immersive neurotechnology

How can an athlete’s true workload be identified? What about concentration, recovery, or the influence of emotional states on performance? How can early signs of declining motivation be detected before they become visible in the results?

To address these challenges, we use Galea, the world’s first XR headset that integrates virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), electroencephalography (EEG), and physiological body monitoring into a single system.

 experiencies

“In the test, I received precise information about the position of my hands with a level of accuracy that I could not achieve with my own equipment.” – Representative of a sports club on motion tracking.

“Eye‑tracking glasses could be particularly useful in supporting training, especially for athletes aiming for the international elite.” – Representative of an association on the eye‑tracking glasses.

“I feel that the data obtained with the device can be effectively used in the future together with a knowledgeable coach who understands neuroscience and can therefore interpret the data and apply it in training.” – Athlete on the Galea XR headset.
